Snag some end-of-season deals

Being outside in the cold defiantly will test your gear. Nearby Nature showed us how to dress for the cold at the event. We recommend the following layers. These can be purchased second hand or new at this time of year as the seasons change. Get into those clearance racks or shop by clearance from your favorite online realtor to make your money go farther!

  • Baselayer- the first layer worn direclty on the skin. We recomend Under Armor and Smartwool brands.

  • Insulating layer - The layer of clothing that adds space between base layer and windproof layer, we suggest Columbia and X?Y

  • Windproof layer - This is key for good protection in winter and in spring, think rain jacket material. We recommend Columbia and Marmont

  • Hats and Mittens - Lets think about mutiple layers of gloves then mittens as you warm the larger layers are removed. We recomd Smartwool, Marmot and Columbia.

  • Footwear - Waterproof footwear is a must. Check out Timberlands which balances both style and use.

Birding

Birding is the activity of observing and identifying birds in their natural habitats. People often do it for fun, relaxation, or to learn more about different bird species. Birding can be enjoyed in every season but spring really is the time the birds are out. Havenwoods State Forest has binoculars you can borrow from the front desk. Please see the website for any questions about the process. Another option is to purchase a bird book and a pair of binoculars. Here is a list of what we would recommend.

Animal Tracking

At Havenwoods State forest a tracking ID route was set up where you could see the animal tracks and then find the animals in nature. Animal tracking is the process of observing and interpreting signs left by animals in the environment to understand their movements, behavior, and activities. Animal tracking can occur in the woods, a park or in your neighborhood, for further learning we recommend Animal Tracks: Midwest Quick Guide.
